Triples lead USI softball to fifth straight win

KISSIMMEE, Fla.—The University of Southern Indiana ran its winning streak to five games Friday with a 2-1 win over Lock Haven University and a 5-4 victory over Dowling College at the Division II Rebel Spring Games.

USI (5-8) fell behind 1-0 against Lock Haven, but came back to score a run in the top of the second and another in the seventh to record the 2-1 victory. Senior centerfielder Sunny Oelling (Valparaiso, Indiana) hit the game-winning triple in the seventh to spur the Screaming Eagles to the victory. Fellow classmate Stephanie Brown (Evansville, Indiana) recorded her first RBI as an Eagle in the second inning.

Junior pitcher Missy Grover (Mishawaka, Indiana) pitched all seven innings, giving up just one unearned run off five hits. Grover (3-3) recorded five strikeouts to pick up her third straight win.

A triple in the fifth inning, this time off the bat of sophomore first baseman/catcher Kristy Groves (Dale, Indiana), lifted the Eagles to victory in the second game of the day. Groves's three-bagger in the bottom of the fifth inning drove in two runs, giving the Eagles a 5-4 lead and the eventual triumph.

Sophomore catcher Lisa Anderson (Chesterton, Indiana) went 2-for-3 with an RBI, while freshman Kristin Eickholt (Van Wert, Ohio) went 2-for-2 with a walk and an RBI. Senior outfielder Nickole Henson (Princeton, Indiana) also recorded an RBI in the win.

Junior hurler Lindsey McNaughton (Carmel, Indiana) gave up four runs, two earned, off eight hits. McNaughton (2-4), however, recorded seven strikeouts to pick up her second consecutive victory.

The Eagles will finish their spring trip Saturday when they take on St. Cloud State University and C.W. Post at 11:30 a.m. (CST) and 1:20 p.m. (CST), respectively. They will open their home schedule March 19 when they host Division I Morehead State University in a 2 p.m. doubleheader at the new USI Softball Field on Broadway.
