USI falls short against UMSL, 87-83

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The University of Southern Indiana men's basketball team fell short in a second half comeback attempt in losing the University of Missouri-St. Louis, 87-83, Saturday afternoon in St. Louis, Missouri. USI falls to 7-1 overall and 1-1 in the GLVC, while UMSL raises its record to 5-1 overall, 1-1 GLVC.

The Screaming Eagles and the Rivermen were all tied up at the intermission, 37-37. USI had two seven-point leads during the half and was led by senior forward Chris Thompson (Starke, Florida) with 10 points.

In the second half, the Rivermen used a 9-0 run to make the score 52-43 with 13:59 left to take control. The Eagles would comeback to tie the score 56-56 only to see the Rivermen answer with a 14-2 run to regain the lead and post the biggest lead of the game, 70-58, with 6:55 to play.

UMSL would nurse that 12-point lead the rest of the way. USI pulled to within two points at 79-77 and 85-83, but could get no closer.

Eagles' junior guard Melvin Hall (Evansville, Indiana) and Thompson finished the game with 19 points each to lead the game. Thompson also would grab a team-high 10 rebounds to record his fifth double-double of the year.

USI returns to the friendly surroundings of the Physical Activities Center for a three-game homestand, beginning December 8 against the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. Game time Thursday is 7:30 p.m.
