INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana men's basketball team flew by Wayne State University, 78-59, Wednesday afternoon in the GLIAC/GLVC Challenge in Indianapolis, Indiana. The challenge is being hosted by the University of Indianapolis.
USI, ranked fifth nationally, raised its record to 12-1 overall, while WSU falls to 3-7. The Screaming Eagles concluded the challenge between the top two conferences in the Great Lakes Region, 2-0.
The Eagles took control of the game with a 19-4 run to lead 22-8 with 11:31 to play in the first half. The margin would increase to as many as 18 points before USI settled for the 40-26 lead at the intermission.
USI boosted the lead to 22 points, 51-29, in the opening minutes of the second half. WSU would cut the margin down to 13 points on several occasions, but would get no closer.
USI was led for the second evening in a row by senior forwardÂ
Chris Thompson (Starke, Florida). Thompson dropped in 17 points to lead the way, while junior guardÂ
Melvin Hall (Evansville, Indiana) hit for 14 points and senior guardÂ
Danny Gibson (Madison, Indiana) added 11 points.
The Eagles improved from three-point range, hitting 10 from beyond the arc against WSU. USI was only able to hit one three-point field goal against Ferris State University Tuesday night.
Following the Christmas break, the Eagles return to action New Year's Eve at the Physical Activities Center against Lees McRae College. Tip-off will be 3 p.m. The USI-Lees McRae match-up will be the nightcap of a men's and women's doubleheader. The opener will feature the USI women's team against Oakland City University at 1 p.m.
