EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana men's basketball team scored under 70 points for the first time this year in defeating Lewis University, 60-49, Saturday afternoon at the Physical Activities Center. USI, ranked 10th nationally, raises its record to 9-1 overall and 3-1 in the GLVC, while Lewis falls to 5-3, 2-2 GLVC.
The victory was the 111th of Head CoachÂ
Rick Herdes'Â career, tying him for second all-time in wins with Wayne Boultinghouse (1974-81). Only former Head Coach Bruce Pearl has more Screaming Eagle wins with 231 during his nine-year tenure.
The Eagles led the game from start to finish. USI led by as many as 12 points in the low-scoring first half, 16-4, with 10:45 to play in the first half and led 27-19 at the intermission.
The second half saw the Eagles extend its lead to as many as 17 points on three different occasions. The closest the Flyers would get in the second half was seven points, 32-25, with 16:28 left in the game.
Defensively, USI held Lewis to just 30.2 percent from the field (16-53) and outrebounded the Flyers, 52-35.
USI junior guardÂ
Melvin Hall (Evansville, Indiana) led the Eagles in scoring for the third time in five games with his first double-double of the season. Hall had a game-high 15 points and 10 rebounds to lead the way.
Hall was followed on the scoreboard by junior guard/forwardÂ
Marty Wise (New Orleans, Louisiana), who had 14 points and nine rebounds. Junior forward/centerÂ
Keith Christmas (Gary, Indiana) tied Hall for the team lead in rebounding with 10 boards.
Both Hall and Christmas had eight defensive rebounds in the game.
USI returns to action at the PAC December 17 when Bryan College comes to Evansville for a 7:30 p.m. game.
