Eagles outlast Greyhounds in five-game thriller

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team won a thrilling five-game match over the University of Indianapolis, 18-30, 30-24, 20-30, 19-30, 24-22, Saturday at the Physical Activities Center.

USI (19-12, 11-5 GLVC) fought off five match points in a deciding fifth game that featured 15 ties and 10 lead changes. The Screaming Eagles rallied to win the final three points of the game to win the fifth set and the match.

Junior outside hitter Emily Ryan (Batesville, Indiana) had eight kills and a .700 attacking percentage in the second game to help the Eagles even the match at a game apiece. USI attacked at a clip of .515 in the second game after hitting just .000 its first-game loss.

After struggling to a .088 attacking percentage in their third-set loss, the Eagles came back with a blistering .389 attacking percentage in the fourth frame to even the match at two games apiece.

Senior middle blocker Laura Ellerbusch (Evansville, Indiana) and junior outside hitter Chelse Doubler (Griffin, Indiana) each had five kills in the fourth-game victory.

For the match, Ryan led all attackers with 22 kills while racking up 17 digs. Ellerbusch and Doubler each chipped in 15 kills, while Ellerbusch had a match-high tying seven blocks. Sophomore setter Stephanie Wilson (Terre Haute, Indiana) finished with a match-high 53 assists and 18 digs, while junior libero Amanda Probst (Wheeler, Illinois) tallied 16 digs.

Indianapolis (22-13, 11-5 GLVC) got 20 kills and a .410 attacking percentage from Emeral Holladay, while Lynne Ross and Whitney Boling each finished with 17 kills in the loss. Emily Huey finished with a team-high 39 assists and Ashley Fallos racked up a team-leading 17 digs.

USI will get a rematch with Indianapolis in the first round of the GLVC Tournament, which will take place November 10-12 in Kansas City, Missouri. Match time is to be announced. The Eagles will be the fourth seed in the tournament, while the Greyhounds will enter as the five seed.
