First half run lifts Eagles to first win

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana women's basketball team overcame a slow start to post an 87-62 victory over Brescia University Tuesday night at the Physical Activities Center.

USI (1-3) used an 11-0 run in the first half to grab a 23-13 lead with less than 10 minutes to play before the intermission.

Junior guard Katie Thiesenhusen (Muskego, Wisconsin) sparked the run by scoring the first five points. Thiesenhusen finished the game with 14 points and three assists, while shooting 6-of-7 from the floor.

After going into the break with a 38-28 advantage, the Screaming Eagles blew the game wide open by reeling off a 9-0 to open the second half and extend their lead to 19 points.

USI shot a blistering 61.5 percent from the field in the second half and scored 30 points off 30 Brescia turnovers.

Sophomore forward Jasmine Baines (Jeffersonville, Indiana) led the Eagles with a game-high 20 points, while junior guard Tiara Brown (Normal, Illinois) went 3-for-3 from behind the arc to finish with 12 points. She also dished out three assists and recorded four steals.

Freshman forward/center Jessica Grimaldo (Carmi, Illinois) finished with 11 points and a game-high 10 rebounds, while freshman point guard Keisha Collins (South Holland, Illinois) scored 10 points and dished out a game-high seven assists.

Megan McGrath led the Bearcats (0-1) with 19 points and six assists, while Jennifer Patrick chipped in 11 points in the loss.

The Eagles return to action Sunday when they host regional foe Northwood University at 2 p.m. at the PAC.
