Southern Indiana (1-0): 88
Caldwell (0-1): 71
Box Score
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. – University of Southern Indiana senior forward Chris Thompson (Starke, Florida) scored a career-high 35 points as the Screaming Eagles defeated Caldwell College, 88-71, in the first round of the Disney Division II Tip-Off Classic at Disney's Wide World of Sports. USI starts the year 1-0, while Caldwell is 0-1.
Thompson set a Tip-Off Classic record by hitting 92.6 percent from the field (13-14) on his way to a career-high in points. He also was perfect from the line (6-6) and from three-point field goal range (3-3).
The Florida native's previous career-high was 28 points against Olivet Nazarene University in the first game of the year last season. The 11 rebounds marked Thompson's 13th career double-double in his two years at USI.
Senior guardÂ
David Bryant (Louisville, Kentucky) followed Thompson in the scoring column with 16 points, while junior guardÂ
Melvin Hall (Evansville, Indiana) began his USI career with a 13-point performance.
The USI defense also played a large role in the victory. The Eagles held the Cougars to less than 10 points in the first 10 minutes of the game and scoreless for five minutes in the second half.
USI's largest lead was 19 points on two different occasions in the second half.
The Eagles resume tournament action Saturday at 7:30 p.m. (CST) against the winner of the University of Nebraska-Omaha-Presbyterian College game. USI is the tournament top ranked team at ninth in the NABC Preseason Top 25, while Nebraska-Omaha is 13th.
