EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana women's soccer team will enter the 2005 GLVC Tournament as the fifth seed thanks to a 2-1 victory over Lewis University Sunday at Strassweg Field.
Sophomore forward
Katie Grossman's (Evansville, Indiana) goal in the 57th minute of the contest and sophomore goalkeeper
Meagan Homolla's (Portage, Indiana) stellar play between the posts assured the Screaming Eagles of their placement in the league's postseason tournament, which starts October 30.
Grossman scored the go-ahead and eventual game-winning goal off a pass from sophomore midfielder
Meghann Cage (Evansville, Indiana). It was the sixth time this season and the second time this weekend Grossman found the back of the net.
Homolla finished the match with six saves, one of which came in the second half on a one-on-one Lewis break-away.
USI (9-7-2, 8-5-0 GLVC) started the scoring less than six minutes into the contest when sophomore forward
Julie Collins (Merrillville, Indiana) used a feed from junior midfielder
Rebecca Cripe (Argos, Indiana) to score her team-leading 11th goal of the season.
Lewis (6-12-2, 3-8-2) answered USI's first goal in the 18th minute of the first half when Allison Wilkerson scored off a corner kick by Courtney Kettel. It was Wilkerson's fourth goal of the season and the Flyer's only corner kick of the match.
The Eagles start the GLVC Tournament a week from today when they travel to Kansas City, Missouri, to take on the fourth-seeded Rockhurst University Hawks. Kick-off is to be announced. The GLVC Semifinals and Championship matches, slated for November 4 and 6, will be at the highest remaining seed following October 30's first round.
