Eagles fall despite record effort

Drop third straight

RENSSELAER, Ind.—Senior guard Jamie Truitt (Owensboro, Kentucky) drained a school-record nine three-pointers and tied a career-high with 31 points, but it was not enough as the University of Southern Indiana women's basketball team fell to Saint Joseph's College, 71-62, at the Richard F. Scharf Alumni Fieldhouse Thursday evening.

The loss is the third straight suffered by the Screaming Eagles, who fall to 10-5 overall and 3-5 in the GLVC.

Truitt, who moved into second all-time at USI in career three-pointers (131), got the Eagles going early scoring six of USI's first nine points to give the Eagles an early lead. After the Pumas took a 10-9 lead, the Eagles answered with a 6-0 run to grab their largest lead of the game (15-10).

SJC (3-12, 2-6 GLVC) battled back to tie the game at 15 and fought the Eagles to a 31-31 tie at the intermission.

Truitt connected on six of her career-high nine three-pointers in the first period, tying a school-record for three-pointers in a half, and led all scorers with 18 points at the break to keep the Eagles in the game.

The Pumas, behind the efforts of senior center Courtney Rosenbaum, opened the second half with a 21-9 run to take a commanding 52-40 lead with 11 minutes to play. Rosenbaum scored seven of her 12 second-half points in the first nine minutes of last period and finished the game with 16 points.

USI, however, fought back behind two three-pointers from Truitt and another three-pointer from sophomore guard Leah Stormont (Haubstadt, Indiana) and took a 62-61 lead with 3:42 to play in the game. Stormont started in place of junior Tiara Brown (Normal, Illinois), who did not make the trip due to a violation in team policy.

Stormont's three-pointer, however, was USI's last bucket of the game as the Pumas closed the contest on a 10-0 run. The Eagles went 0-for-5 and committed five of their season-high 29 turnovers in the last 3:42 of the game.

SJC's junior guard Ashley Hughes scored seven of her team and career-high 22 points in the final 3:42, including a three-pointer to give the Pumas a 64-62 lead.

In addition to Truitt's 31 points, senior forward/center Andrea Engleking (Charlottesville, Indiana) and junior forward Sabrina Brandon (Danville, Illinois) finished with 13 and 10 points, respectively. Junior guard/forward Ashley Green (Otterbein, Indiana) led the Eagles on the board with a game and career-high 13 rebounds. Truitt collected seven rebounds.

USI will travel to Kenosha, Wisconsin, to take on the University of Wisconsin-Parkside Saturday at 1 p.m. The Rangers (12-7, 6-3 GLVC) defeated the University of Missouri-St. Louis 69-43 Thursday evening.
