USI women drop fourth straight decision

KENOSHA, Wis.—The University of Southern Indiana women's basketball team saw its season-long four-game losing streak grow to four games with a 71-44 setback to the University of Wisconsin-Parkside Saturday afternoon at the DeSimone Gymnasium.

USI (10-6, 3-6 GLVC) found itself down by just one point with five minutes in the first half but was on the opposite end of a 17-2 run that sent the Screaming Eagles into the locker room facing a 40-24 deficit.

The Eagles were held scoreless for the first seven minutes of the second half as the Rangers built their lead to 29 points.

USI cut the Ranger lead to 22 points with seven minutes to play in the game, but a 9-0 run gave the Rangers their largest lead of the game (68-37) with less than five minutes to play in the contest.

Turnovers and the battle on the boards were a major issue for the Eagles during the game. UWP forced the Eagles into 25 turnovers, converting the Eagle miscues into 28 points, and out-rebounded the Eagles 44-34. The Rangers also had an 18-4 advantage in second-chance points, holding the Eagles to just four offensive rebounds, and outscored USI 36-22 in the paint.

USI also struggled from the field, shooting just 35.3 percent. Junior Sabrina Brandon (Danville, Illinois) led the Eagles with 10 points, while junior guard/forward Ashley Green (Otterbein, Indiana) led the Eagles with six rebounds.

The Rangers (13-7, 7-3 GLVC), who defeated USI for just the second time in 19 tries, were led by freshman guard Kim Murphy and sophomore guard Linda Glick. The two came off the bench to combine for 30 points, while senior center Sammy Kromm matched Glick's total of 14 points. Senior guard/forward Carrie Weir had a game-high seven rebounds.

USI will return to action Thursday when it hosts Southern Illinois University Edwardsville at 5:15 p.m.
