Eagles survive scare

Top Rangers in five

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team survived a scare Saturday to defeat the University of Wisconsin-Parkside in five games. The Screaming Eagles cruised to a 30-24 victory in game one and a 30-16 victory in game three, but suffered a 30-23 game-two setback and a 30-25 loss in game four before winning the deciding game, 15-12.

Trailing early in game three, USI got a huge boost from sophomore outside hitter Amanda Probst (Wheeler, Illinois). Probst nailed down four service aces in five serves to give the Eagles the momentum they needed to cruise to an easy win.

In game four, Probst landed four more service aces and it looked as if the Eagles would run away with the match. However, UWP went on a 15-5 run that turned a six-point deficit into an 18-14 lead midway through the fourth frame.

The Rangers (4-9 overall, 0-2 GLVC) used the momentum swing to take the fourth set and even the match at two games apiece.

USI (8-4 overall, 2-0 GLVC), however, capitalized on two UWP service errors and five attacking errors to take the deciding game. Sophomore outside hitter Chelse Doubler (Griffin, Indiana) had three kills and a solo block in the fifth frame to help the Eagles' cause.

For the match, USI was led by senior middle blocker Leeanne Gross (Decatur, Indiana) and junior middle blocker Laura Ellerbusch (Newburgh, Indiana). Each finished with 15 kills, while Ellerbusch had a match-high four blocks.

Probst finished the match in need of just one service ace and one kill for her first career triple-double. She finished with a team-leading 20 digs and the nine service aces were a career high.

Freshman setter Stephanie Wilson (Terre Haute, Indiana) had 47 assists and 17 digs, while freshman libero Eva Kieffer (Mt. Carmel, Illinois) finished with 13 digs.

USI will travel to Kentucky Wesleyan College September 24 (6 p.m.) and Northern Kentucky University September 25 (1 p.m.).
