Momentum change sparks USI volleyball to victory

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—Call it momentum change, but the University of Southern Indiana volleyball team is happy to call it a victory. That is because the Screaming Eagles erased an eight-point deficit in the first game to set the tone for a 3-1 victory over Lewis University in the GLVC opener Friday night at the Physical Activities Center.

Down 21-13 in game one, the Eagles changed momentum as they went on a 13-3 run to set up a 30-27 victory and a 1-0 lead in the match. USI faced a 27-16 deficit in game two and went on an 11-1 run to tie the set a 28 before falling 30-28 and into a 1-1 tie after two frames.

In game three, the Eagles faced a two-point deficit before going on an 8-0 run that put them up 27-21. They held onto claim a 30-23 victory in the third set and take a 2-1 lead in the match.

USI (7-4 overall, 1-0 GLVC) trailed by more than a point only once in the fourth frame, but faced game-point twice before hanging on for the 34-32 victory in the deciding game.

Senior middle blocker Leeanne Gross (Decatur, Indiana) led the Eagles with a match-high 16 kills, while senior outside hitter Randi Raff (Rensselaer, Indiana) had a team and career-high 21 digs off the bench. Freshman setter Stephanie Wilson (Terre Haute, Indiana) finished with 62 assists and 10 digs.

The Eagles will host the University of Wisconsin-Parkside in a 2 p.m. match Saturday at the PAC.

Lewis is 7-4 and 0-1 in the GLVC after the loss.
