EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team completed a perfect weekend Saturday by downing the University of Central Arkansas 3-0 (30-13, 30-17, 30-10) and the University of Alabama-Huntsville 3-1 (26-30, 30-27, 31-29, 30-14).
USI, which is now 3-0 after its sweep of Lincoln Memorial University on Friday night, hit .356 in its victory over Central Arkansas. The Screaming Eagles, led by a match-high 10-kill performance from senior middle blocker
Leeanne Gross (Decatur, Indiana), held the Sugar Bears to a negative attacking percentage in the victory.
In their second match of the day, the Eagles fought back to tie Alabama-Huntsville at a game apiece. However, they found themselves in a 7-1 hole to start the third game.
USI, behind the solid play of Gross and sophomore outside hitters
Amanda Probst (Wheeler, Illinois) and
Chelse Doubler (Griffin, Indiana), went on a 12-4 run from that point to take a 13-11 advantage.
The two teams traded points and the Eagles were able to overcome a four-point deficit, but faced a game point at 29-28 when Doubler came up with a game-tying kill. She ended the game with a kill and gave the Eagles a 2-1 advantage in the match after a UAH attacking error gave the Eagles and opportunity at game-point.
USI dominated the fourth game, hitting .459 as a team, and holding the Chargers to just seven kills.
For the match, Gross recorded a game-high 18 kills to go with 15 digs, while Probst rang up a career-high 17 kills and 14 digs. Sophomore middle blocker
Laura Ellerbusch (Newburgh, Indiana) had 14 kills, while Doubler and senior right side hitter
Natalie Atzinger (Louisville, Kentucky) each had 12 kills.
Freshman setter
Stephanie Wilson (Terre Haute, Indiana) was three kills shy of a triple-double after ringing up 64 assists and 10 digs.
The Eagles will compete next weekend in the Days Inn Classic in Allendale, Michigan. Their next home game is September 17 when they take on Lewis University.
USI NOTES: Of the final 22 points that Alabama-Huntsville scored on USI, only two came off of UAH's serves…Gross moved into a tie for third on USI's all-time career service ace's list. She now has 145 and is tied with former Academic All-America Kristi Wheeler…the USI-UAH match was the only match during the eight-match USI Invitational to go more than three games…USI and Indianapolis also were the only two teams to go a perfect 3-0 for the weekend…the Eagles are now 86-6 when winning game one of a match and have won 99 matches since 2000.
