Highland Heights, Ky. --The University of Southern Indiana baseball team saw its hopes of a berth in the GLVC Tournament fade as Northern Kentucky University took both games of doubleheader Saturday afternoon in Highland Heights, Kentucky. The Norse (31-23, 24-14 GLVC) won the opener, 1-0, and the nightcap, 7-2.

USI's record falls to 23-31 overall and 17-21 in the GLVC, but is still in contention for the fifth or sixth spot in the GLVC Tournament. The Screaming Eagles were aided by a doubleheader sweep of Kentucky Wesleyan College by conference front-running University of Wisconsin-Parkside and the Saint Joseph's College-University of Missouri-St. Louis doubleheader in Rensselaer, Indiana was cancelled due to rain.

To earn a berth in the tournament, the Eagles need to sweep the doubleheader with NKU on Sunday and for UWP to sweep KWC and/or UMSL to sweep St. Joseph's. Should this happen, USI would have a better record by just percentage points over KWC or St. Joseph's.

In Saturday's doubleheader, USI junior right-hander Andy Rumpler (Hamilton, Ohio) saw his six-game winning streak stopped despite a valiant effort on the mound. Rumpler went six innings, allowing three hits and one unearned run while striking out two. He falls to 7-3 overall, 6-2 GLVC play.

NKU right-hander Derrick Moeves out-pitched Rumpler, allowing on one USI hit and striking 12 batters.

The Norse completed the doubleheader sweep in game two by scoring all the runs they would need in a four-run third inning. USI junior right-hander Jae Fadde (West Lafayette, Indiana) saw his personal winning streak ended at three, going five innings in the loss. Fadde allowed seven hits and five earned runs before giving way to freshman right-hander Adam Summers (Dyer, Indiana), who allowed four hits and two runs.

The Eagles were led at the plate in game two by senior first baseman Toby Pritchard (Ft. Wayne, Indiana), junior centerfielder Noah Wetzel (New Salisbury, Indiana) and sophomore third baseman Jared Tekulve (Madison, Indiana) with two hits each.

The Eagles and the Norse will conclude the 2004 regular season Sunday, May 2, in an 11 a.m. (CT) doubleheader in Highland Heights.
