Bats awaken as Eagles stay alive

Anderson comes through in clutch

EAST PEORIA, Ill.—University of Southern Indiana softball freshman catcher/designated player Lisa Anderson (Chesterton, Indiana) hit a two-out, two-run homerun over the leftfield fence in the bottom of the sixth inning to propel the Screaming Eagles to a 4-2 victory over #21-ranked Southern Illinois University Edwardsville in the elimination bracket of the GLVC Tournament Saturday evening. It was the second time in three games that Anderson has come through with a game-winning hit for the Eagles.

USI (26-23) started the game with a two-run first inning when senior catcher/utility player Kristen Houseworth (Martinsville, Indiana) hit a two-out, two-run double to right field.

Senior pitcher/third baseman Shannon Emmons (Boonville, Indiana) came on in relief to pick up the victory. Emmons (13-9) pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings en route to her third victory of the tournament. She has thrown 18 1/3 consecutive scoreless innings.

Emmons also went 3-of-3 from the plate with a run scored.

Earlier in the day, the Eagles pounded out 11 hits and took advantage of three errors to best the University of Missouri-St. Louis, 6-0.

Junior centerfielder Sunny Oelling (Valparaiso, Indiana) hit a two-out, two-run single through the middle of the infield in the top of the second inning to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead.

Houseworth gave USI a 3-0 lead in the third inning with a run-scoring double to right-centerfield.

USI added two more runs in the sixth inning and another in the seventh to give the Eagles all the runs they would need.

Emmons picked up the victory after giving up just four hits in seven innings of work. She also went 2-of-4 from the plate with a double and a run scored.

USI will play the loser of the Lewis University-Northern Kentucky University game, which was suspended in the top of the second inning. That game is scheduled to resume Sunday at 9 a.m., with the loser and USI playing in the following contest.

If USI is successful, it would play the winner of the Lewis-NKU game later in the day. If the Eagles can win three straight Sunday, they would be crowned as the GLVC champions and earn the GLVC's automatic qualifier for the NCAA Division II Tournament.
