Clutch performances keep Eagles alive

EAST PEORIA, Ill.—After falling to the University of Wisconsin-Parkside in the first round of the GLVC Tournament Friday morning, the University of Southern Indiana softball team endured nine innings to outlast the University of Indianapolis in the elimination bracket Friday afternoon.

Freshman catcher/designated player Lisa Anderson (Chesterton, Indiana) hit a game-winning, two-out single through the left side of the infield to score senior shortstop Nichole Pike (Fairfield, Illinois) and give the Screaming Eagles a 1-0 victory over the Greyhounds of Indianapolis.

Pike, who was 3-of-4 with a double and a run scored, led the bottom of the ninth inning off with a single to the right-centerfield gap before scoring the winning run.

Senior pitcher/third baseman Shannon Emmons (Boonville, Indiana) allowed just four hits in nine innings of work to pick up the complete-game victory. Emmons (11-9) struck out eight batters and did not allow a walk en route to her fourth shutout of the season.

In USI's first contest, the Eagles surrendered runs in the third, fourth, and seventh innings as they fell 3-1 to Wisconsin-Parkside.

Sophomore hurler Missy Grover (Mishawaka, Indiana) was charged with the loss after giving up two runs off nine hits in four-plus innings of work. Grover (11-12) struck out two while walking one before leaving the game in the top of the fourth.

USI got an offensive boost from senior first baseman Monica Tepe (Granger, Indiana), who went 3-for-3. Pike recorded USI's lone RBI in the contest with a single in the fifth inning.

The Eagles (24-23) will play the winner of the University of Missouri-St. Louis/Lewis University contest, which is in the midst of a rain and lightning delay with Lewis leading 4-0 in the sixth inning. USI's third game is likely to be postponed until Saturday.
