USI drops doubleheader to SJC

Evansville, Ind. –University of Southern Indiana baseball team's goal of earning a berth in the GLVC Tournament suffered a setback Saturday afternoon, dropping a doubleheader, 3-2 and 5-1, to Saint Joseph's College at the USI Baseball Field. USI falls to 21-29 overall and 15-19 in the GLVC, while SJC moves ahead of the Eagles in the league standings with a 21-23 record, 15-15 in the conference.

In game one, the Pumas scored the game winning runs in the top of the seventh to win the opener. USI started the scoring in the bottom of the fourth on a RBI single by sophomore third baseman Jared Tekulve (Madison, Indiana). Tekulve drove in junior rightfielder Matt Keener (Newburgh, Indiana), who had singled to open the inning and advanced to second on a single by senior first baseman Toby Pritchard (Ft. Wayne, Indiana).

After SJC took a 3-1 lead in the top of the seventh, the Eagles pulled to within one at 3-2 when Pritchard scored from third when junior shortstop Corey Goers (LaPorte, Indiana) hit into a double play. USI left the tying and winning runs at first and third when junior catcher Trevor Kelly (Marshall, Indiana) ground out to end the game.

Freshman right-hander Adam Summers (Dyer, Indiana) fell to 3-5 this spring, going 6.2 innings and allowing eight hits and three runs (two earned). He also struck out three Pumas.

In the nightcap, SJC broke a 1-1 tie with four runs in the top of the sixth for the 5-1 victory. USI sophmore right-hander Mike Watson (Madison, Indiana) lost for on the second time this spring, going 5.2 innings and allowing nine hits and five earned runs. Watson falls to 4-2 in 2004.

The Eagles and the Pumas will conclude their four-game series Sunday, April 25. Sunday is Senior Day for USI and its six seniors – outfielder Adam Anderson (Raleigh, Illinois), right-handed pitcher Nathan Esche (Mt. Vernon, Indiana), catcher Mike Kottmeyer (Boulder, Illinois), right-handed pitcher Drew Neel (Newburgh, Indiana), and first baseman Toby Pritchard (Ft. Wayne, Indiana) – will be recognized prior the start of the noon doubleheader.
