USI softball slide hits six

ROMEOVILLE, Ill.—The University of Southern Indiana softball team produced just six hits Sunday afternoon as it lost a pair of games to Lewis University, 6-0 and 1-0. The Screaming Eagles have now lost six straight games heading into the final week of the regular season.

USI (20-21, 8-6 GLVC) produced just two hits and failed to get a runner past second base in game one. Senior pitcher/third baseman Shannon Emmons (Boonville, Indiana) went 1-for-3 with a double and freshman catcher Lisa Anderson (Chesterton, Indiana) went 1-for-3 with a single.

Sophomore pitcher Missy Grover (Mishawaka, Indiana) was charged with the loss in game one after giving up six runs off 10 hits in 5 1/3 innings of work. Grover (9-11) gave up a two-run blast in the second inning and another two-run shot in the third inning as she lost for the third straight outing.

Emmons (9-8) was charged with the loss in game two. She gave up just four hits, but a two-hit sixth inning for Lewis led to the only run of the contest and Emmons' third consecutive setback.

USI had a chance to tie the game in the top of the seventh inning but failed to capitalize on senior shortstop Nichole Pike's (Fairfield, Illinois) lead-off double.

The Eagles will return to action Thursday, April 22, when they take on Kentucky Wesleyan College in a 3 p.m. doubleheader at the USI Softball Field.

Lewis improves to 34-10 overall and 14-2 in the GLVC with the victories.
