USI sweeps doubleheader from Bellarmine

Evansville, IN –University of Southern Indiana junior right-hander Matt Keener (Newburgh, Indiana) led off the eighth inning with a home run to centerfield to pick his first victory of the spring and lead the Eagles to a sweep of Bellarmine University Wednesday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field. USI raises its record to 18-24 overall and 12-14 in the GLVC, while Bellarmine falls to 15-22, 12-14 GLVC.

Keener (1-3) went three-for-five at the plate in game two with a home run, a triple, a single, two runs scored, and a RBI, while going eight innings on the mound for the victory. He dominated on the mound, allowing Bellarmine just eight hits, three unearned runs and striking out four.

After USI posted a 1-0 in the second inning, the Knights rallied with their three unearned runs in the bottom half of the frame. The Eagles responded with a single tally in the sixth, seventh, and the eight innings for the victory.

Sophomore right-hander Matt Goans (Evansville, Indiana) finished the game for Keener on the mound, pitching a perfect ninth for his team-high fifth save of the year.

In the game one, the Eagles scored two in the third, fourth, and sixth innings to win 6-3. Junior right-hander Andy Rumpler (Hamilton, Ohio) got the win for the Eagles, going 4.1 innings and allowing seven hits and three earned runs to raise his record to a team-best 5-2 record.

Freshman right-hander Aaron Clark (Madisonville, Kentucky) relieved Rumpler in the fifth and picked up his second save of the year. Clark pitched 2.2 innings and allowed only two hits, while striking out one.

At the plate in game one, sophomore third baseman Jared Tekulve (Madison, Indiana) had three hits and a run scored to lead a 13-hit USI attack. Tekulve was followed by senior catcher Mike Kottmeyer (Boulder, Illinois) and junior second baseman Bryan Davis (West Chester, Ohio) with two hits each.

USI returns to the road and GLVC action this weekend when it travels to the University of Indianapolis Saturday and Sunday, April 17-18 for a four-game series. The first pitch is scheduled for noon each day.

The Eagles will play their final home series at the USI Baseball Field Saturday and Sunday, April 24-25, when they host Saint Joseph's College for a four-game series. Senior Day is scheduled for April 25.
