EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana softball team swept a twinbill against Oakland City University Thursday afternoon at the USI Softball Field. The Screaming Eagles won the first game 7-0 and the second game 5-0 to up their home winning streak to 16.
USI (14-15) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning of game one. The Eagles took advantage of a walk and two hit batsmen while reeling off three hits to score all four runs with two outs.
The Eagles tacked on runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings to pick up the 7-0 victory. Freshman designated player
Lisa Anderson (Chesterton, Indiana) went 2-for-3 with a double and a pair of RBIs, while senior leftfielder
Jessica Brown (Evansville, Indiana) went 1-for-3 with a pair of runs batted in. Senior pitcher/infielder
Shannon Emmons (Boonville, Indiana), senior first baseman
Monica Tepe (Granger, Indiana), and freshman pitcher/outfielder
Nikki Nichols (Henderson, Kentucky) all recorded RBIs in the victory.
As a team, the Eagles recorded nine hits to help sophomore pitcher
Missy Grover (Mishawaka, Indiana) pick up the complete-game shutout. Grover (6-8) allowed just five hits and walked just one batter, while recording five strikeouts.
Junior centerfielder
Sunny Oelling (Valparaiso, Indiana) extended her hit streak to 10 games to start off the second contest. Oelling reached first base off a slap and scored USI's first run after a stolen base, a sacrifice bunt by senior shortstop
Nichole Pike (Fairfield, Illinois), and an RBI ground out by senior second baseman
Brooke Biggs (Osceola, Indiana).
The run was all Emmons would need as she mowed down eight OCU batters en route to her sixth victory of the season. Emmons (6-5) allowed just five hits in the complete-game shutout.
Emmons also helped herself from the plate by going 2-for-3 with a double, a run scored, and an RBI. Oelling and Anderson also had RBIs in the 5-0 victory.
The Eagles, who have won 32 of their last 33 games at the USI Softball Field, will resume conference play this Saturday when they travel to Indianapolis to take on the University of Indianapolis in an 11 a.m. (CST) doubleheader. USI will play Saint Joseph's College in Rensselaer, Indiana, the following day. That doubleheader is slated for a noon (CDT) start time.
