USI baseball falls to #12 Augusta State

One inning once again spelled doom for the University of Southern Indiana baseball team as it lost to 12th-ranked Augusta State University, 5-2, Tuesday afternoon in Augusta, Georgia. USI sees its record fall to 4-7 overall in 2004, while Augusta State goes to 13-3 on the young season.

With the game tied 1-1 after four innings, the Jaguars scored four times in off of right-handed starter Jae Fadde (West Lafayette, Indiana) in the fifth to take a 5-1 lead. Fadde goes to 0-2.

Freshman right-hander Aaron Clark (Madisonville, Indiana), sophomore left-hander Nathan Arnold (Evansville, Indiana) and sophomore right-hander Matt Goans (Evansville, Indiana) were solid in relief, allowing just one hit between them.

The Eagles scored their runs in the first and ninth innings, led by four players with multiple hits. Junior centerfielder Noah Wetzel (New Salisbury, Indiana) and senior rightfielder Toby Pritchard (Ft. Wayne, Indiana) led the way with two hits and an RBI, while senior third baseman Adam Stone (Mt. Vernon, Indiana) and sophomore first baseman Derik Hutton (Versailles, Indiana) had a pair of hits.

USI concludes its spring road trip and the two-game series at Augusta State University Wednesday, March 10. Game time is 1:30 p.m. The Eagles return to the friendly confines of the USI Baseball Field Saturday and Sunday, March 13-14, to open the GLVC 40-game regular season schedule with Quincy University. The first pitch is scheduled for noon on both Saturday and Sunday.
