USI softball scores 12 runs to split with Augusta State

AUGUSTA, Ga.—The University of Southern Indiana softball team exploded for 12 runs in the second game to forge a split of a doubleheader with Augusta State University Monday afternoon at Jaguar Field. The Screaming Eagles fell in the first game, 2-1, before winning the second game, 12-5.

USI (4-5) capitalized on eight ASU errors to score three runs in the first and third innings, five runs in the fifth inning, and another run in the seventh inning to pull out the 12-5 victory in the second game.

Senior pitcher/infielder Shannon Emmons (Boonville, Indiana) and freshman utility player Kerrie Burton (Kokomo, Indiana) each recorded a pair of RBIs in the game to lead the Eagles offensively. Emmons went 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored, while Burton went 2-for-4 with a pair of singles and a run scored.

As a team, the Eagles recorded 13 hits and seven runs batted in. In addition to Emmons and Burton, senior catcher Kristen Houseworth (Martinsville, Indiana), senior first baseman Monica Tepe (Granger, Indiana), and senior outfielder Jessica Brown (Evansville, Indiana) all recorded RBIs.

Sophomore pitcher Missy Grover (Mishawaka, Indiana) picked up the complete-game victory. Grover (2-2) gave up five runs, two earned, off six hits while striking out three batters.

In the first game, the Eagles' bats were held in check. USI had just four hits, two of which were doubles off the bat of junior centerfielder Sunny Oelling (Valparaiso, Indiana). Oelling went 2-for-4 with an RBI in the first game. She was 2-for-5 with a run scored in the second game.

Emmons (2-3) was charged with the loss in the first game after giving up two runs off five hits in six innings of work. She struck out six while walking three batters.

The Eagles possessed a 1-0 advantage heading into the bottom of the fifth inning when the Jaguars put together a two-out rally that saw two straight singles followed by a two-run double to centerfield.

ASU (5-9) got its victory out of pitcher Erin Cown (3-4), while Sara McMichael (0-1) was charged with the loss in the second game.

The Eagles will be at #17 Georgia College and State University Tuesday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
