Comeback prevents USI sweep of GLVC front-runner

USI 5, @Wisconsin-Parkside 2
@Wisconsin-Parkside 4, USI 3 (10 innings)

KENOSHA, Wis.—The GLVC leading University of Wisconsin-Parkside Rangers scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth and another in the bottom of the 10th to defeat the University of Southern Indiana baseball team Sunday in the second game of a doubleheader. The Screaming Eagles won the first game 5-2, before falling in the second game 4-3, in 10 innings.

USI (9-20, 5-11 GLVC) scored three times in the second inning and twice more in the top of the seventh inning to defeat the host Rangers in the first contest. Senior shortstop Corey Goers (LaPorte, Indiana) hit a two-run home run to leftfield in the seventh inning to ensure the Eagle victory.

Sophomore infielder/outfielder Jared Tekulve (Madison, Indiana) also recorded an RBI for the Eagles in the first game.

Junior pitcher Andy Rumpler (Hamilton, Ohio) picked up the complete-game victory in the first game. Rumpler (2-2) spread eight hits throughout seven innings, while only giving up two runs and recording six strike outs.

In game two, the Eagles jumped out to a 3-0 lead after five innings before the Rangers came back in the late innings.

Senior pitcher/utility player Matt Keener (Newburgh, Indiana) got the Eagles started with an RBI double to right-centerfield that scored junior catcher/outfielder Trevor Kelly (Marshall, Indiana). Kenner scored the second run of the fourth inning when junior catcher Andy Rock (West Chester, Ohio) hit a single through the middle of the infield.

Kelly drove in USI's third run of the second game with an RBI single to centerfield in the top of the fifth inning.

Keener pitched seven strong innings, but gave up three runs off three hits in the bottom of the eighth inning to let the Rangers back into the game. Keener had allowed just five hits in the first seven innings.

Sophomore hurler Nathan Arnold (Evansville, Indiana) was charged with the loss after giving up a lead-off homerun to centerfield in the bottom of the 10th inning. Arnold (0-2) got the Eagles out of a bases-loaded jam in the previous inning to keep the Eagles' hopes alive in extra innings.

The Eagles will return to action Wednesday, March 31, when they host Kentucky Wesleyan College in a 1 p.m. doubleheader at the USI Baseball Field.
