Eagles jump at opportunities to salvage split

Missouri-St. Louis 9, @USI 7
@USI 5, Missouri-St. Louis 2

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana baseball team took advantage of an error and two hit batsmen to plate three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning and defeat the University of Missouri-St. Louis, 5-2, in the second game of a doubleheader Wednesday at the USI Baseball Field. The Screaming Eagles dropped the first game, 9-7, before salvaging the split with the win in game two.

With the game tied at two in the bottom of the eighth inning, USI's first two batters, junior right-fielder Matt Keener (Newburgh, Indiana) and sophomore infielder Brent Perry (Versailles, Indiana), were both hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second with no outs.

Senior first baseman Toby Pritchard (Ft. Wayne, Indiana) laid down a sacrifice bunt along the third base line, but reached first and advanced to second on a throwing error by UMSL third baseman Logan Hughes.

As a consequence of Hughes' throw, Keener came around to score and break the 2-2 tie. Perry scored two batters later when senior third baseman Adam Stone (Mt. Vernon, Indiana) lined a shot off the top of Hughes's glove and into leftfield.

Senior shortstop Corey Goers (LaPorte, Indiana) drove in USI's final run with a deep fly ball to leftfield that brought in Pritchard from third base.

USI (8-17, 4-8 GLVC) originally took the lead in the first inning when Keener, this week's GLVC "Player of the Week," singled through the middle to drive in junior centerfielder Noah Wetzel (New Salisbury, Indiana), who had reached third on a two-out triple to right-centerfield.

Wetzel, who was 3-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored in the first game, drove in USI's second run of the contest with a single to left-centerfield. UMSL tied the game in the sixth inning with two runs off three straight hits that included a pair of doubles.

Sophomore hurler Mike Watson (Madison, Indiana) picked up his second straight victory in game two. Watson (2-0) pitched eight strong innings, giving up just two runs off five hits.

Sophomore pitcher Matt Goans (Evansville, Indiana) came in and retired three straight batters in the top of the ninth inning to pick up his second save of the season.

In game one, UMSL (11-13-1, 6-6 GLVC) scored four runs in the first inning and three in the fourth to pick up a 9-7 decision. Freshman pitcher Adam Vetter (Crown Point, Indiana) was pinned with the loss for the Eagles after giving up seven runs off nine hits in 3 2/3 innings of work. He falls to 1-2 on the season with the setback.

USI will travel to Kenosha, Wisconsin, this Saturday and Sunday to take on the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. Both GLVC doubleheaders are schedule for noon starts.
