ROMEOVILLE, Ill.—The University of Southern Indiana baseball team picked up a series split Sunday by defeating Lewis University 6-2 in the first game of a twinbill before falling 9-1 in the second contest.

In game one, USI (7-16, 3-7 GLVC) used a single and three straight walks to grab a 1-0 advantage in the first inning. The Screaming Eagles made it 3-0 in the top of the third inning by ripping off three singles and taking advantage of two more free passes.

USI tacked on three more runs in the top of the fifth inning before finishing with the 6-2 victory.

Sophomore third baseman Brent Perry (Versailles, Indiana) went 0-for-1 but took advantage of three walks to pick up an RBI and score a run. Junior utility player Trevor Kelly (Marshall, Michigan) went 2-for-2 with a walk, an RBI, and a pair of runs scored, while senior infielder Adam Stone (Mt. Vernon, Indiana) went 2-of-4 with two runs batted in.

Freshman hurler Adam Summers (Dyer, Indiana) picked up the complete-game victory. Summers (1-1) gave up just two runs, one earned, off four hits and a walk. He struck out five.

In game two, Lewis (8-11, 2-2 GLVC) hurler Matt Tanton held the Eagles to one run off four hits. The Flyers, on the flip side, exploded for nine runs off nine hits while taking advantage of four USI miscues.

Lewis scored an unearned run in the bottom of the first inning to take a 1-0 advantage. After senior catcher Mike Kottmeyer (Boulder, Illinois) blasted his third homerun of the season over the right-centerfield fence in the top of the second inning, the Flyers' centerfielder Brian Davis answered with a solo shot to right field in the bottom half of the inning to put Lewis up 2-1.

The Flyers tacked on a pair of insurance runs in each of the fourth and sixth innings before putting up the final three runs of the contest in the bottom half of the eighth inning.

Junior utility player Matt Keener (Newburgh, Indiana) was charged with the loss. Kenner (0-3) gave up six runs, four earned, off eight hits and a pair of walks in 5 2/3 innings of work.

The Eagles will return home Wednesday, March 24, for a GLVC doubleheader with defending GLVC champion Missouri-St. Louis. First pitch is scheduled for noon at the USI Baseball Field.
