LAKELAND, Fla.—The University of Southern Indiana softball team went 1-2 on Saturday to finish third in the four-team Florida Southern College Spring Fling. The Screaming Eagles, who went 1-2 on Friday with losses to #13 Florida Southern and Ashland University and a victory over Queens College of New York, started the day with a 3-2 win over Ashland before falling to FSC, 6-0, in the second round of tournament play.
USI (8-11) completed the day with an 8-0 loss, in six innings, to Ashland in the consolation bracket.
On the weekend, the Eagles were led by senior second baseman
Brooke Biggs (Osceola, Indiana) and junior outfielder
Nickole Henson (Princeton, Indiana). Both recorded a .429 batting average, with Biggs recording six hits to go along with six walks and an RBI in 20 plate appearances.
As a team, the Eagles were held to a .186 batting average, while the opposition recorded a .371 batting average.
USI will travel to Louisville, Kentucky, Wednesday, March 17, to take on Bellarmine University in a non-conference doubleheader. The Eagles will open conference play Saturday, March 20, when Quincy University visits the USI Softball Field for a noon doubleheader.
