EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – The fourth-ranked University of Southern Indiana men's basketball team could not get on track from the field in the second half in losing to Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, 75-70, Saturday afternoon in Edwardsville, Illinois. USI falls to 4-2 overall and 3-1 in the GLVC, while SIUE goes to 6-2 overall, 3-0 GLVC.

The Screaming Eagles controlled much of the first half and led at the intermission, 38-31. USI came back after spotting the Cougars an 8-2 lead to take a 17-14 lead with 8:07 to play in the half on a three-point field goal by freshman guard Carl Richburg (Mason, Ohio). The Eagles were able to extend the led to as many as nine points, 30-21, on one of sophomore forward Geoff Van Winkle's (Ferdinand, Indiana) three first half three-point bombs.

USI's offense went cold in the second half, shooting only 35.5 percent from the field (11-31) and 28.6 percent from beyond the three-point arc (2-7). The Cougars defensive also took USI senior center Randy Holbrook (St. Louis, Missouri) and senior guard Cris Brunson (Evansville, Indiana) out of the game, holding them to six points, respectively. Brunson did not score his first points until 5:16 to play on a pair of free throws.

The Eagles held the lead in the second half until SIUE tied the score at 42-42 with 12:09 to play and took the lead for good, 44-42, on a pair of free throws by senior forward Joel Jaye with 11:42 to play.

USI stayed close, cutting the lead to 52-50 on a pair of free throws by Richburg, but that was as close as the Eagles would be.

USI was led by VanWinkle, who was held to two points in the second half, and junior forward Chris Thompson (Starke, Florida) with 12 points each, while junior forward Stacy Pearson (Miami, Florida) had 10 points to round out the double-figure scorers.
