EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana men's basketball team got back on track with an 83-63 victory over the University of Missouri-St. Louis Wednesday evening at the Physical Activities Center. USI, which has won 13-straight at the PAC, goes to 5-2 overall and 4-1 in the GLVC, while UMSL goes to 2-6 overall, 0-5 GLVC.
After spotting the Rivermen a 9-2 lead in the opening minutes, sophomore forwardÂ
Geoff Van Winkle (Ferdinand, Indiana) capped a 13-5 run with a three-pointer to give Screaming Eagles the lead for good at 15-14. USI continued to build the lead, extending the margin to 16 points, 42-26, by the intermission.
The Eagles continued their offensive attack in the second half by shooting a blistering 64.0 percent (16-25) and pushed their lead to as many as 23 points on two different occasions. The closest the Rivermen would come to the Eagles was with 10:47 to play when they cut the lead to 58-46.
USI had five players score in double figures, led by Van Winkle and junior guardÂ
David Bryant (Louisville, Kentucky) with 14 points each off the bench. Junior forwardÂ
Chris Thompson (Starke, Florida) and senior centerÂ
Randy Holbrook (St. Louis, Missouri) contributed 13 points each, while senior centerÂ
Reque Newsome (St. Petersburg, Florida) dropped in 12 points off the bench.
The Eagles were out rebounded in the game for only the second time this season, 37-29, and were led by Thompson with a team-high six boards.
USI is idle until it goes on the road to play in the Lions Club Holiday Classic hosted by Ferris State University December 20-21. USI will play host Ferris State on December 20 at 6:30 p.m. (CT) and Wayne State University on December 21 at 4:30 p.m.
