USI opens GLVC action with a victory

EVANSVILLE, Ind.
 – The University of Southern Indiana started the 2004-05 GLVC season off with a victory, defeating the University of Indianapolis, 87-66, Friday evening at the Physical Activities Center. USI raises its records to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the GLVC, while Indianapolis falls to 1-1 overall, 0-1 GLVC.

The Screaming Eagles started a 20-8 run midway through the first half to build a 39-22 lead and take control of the game. The Greyhounds kept it close before intermission, going on a 9-4 run of their own to go into the locker room down 43-31.

The second half saw the Eagles pull away from the Greyhounds. USI pushed the lead to 19 points, 56-37, in the opening five minutes of the second half and extended the lead to as many as 27 points, 80-53, with 3:37 to play in the contest.

USI was led by a pair of seniors, guard Cris Brunson (Evansville, Indiana) and center Randy Holbrook (St. Louis, Missouri). Brunson posted a team-high 20 points, while Holbrook dropped in 15 points. Junior guard David Bryant (Louisville, Kentucky) rounded out the double-figure scorers with 12 points off the bench.

Eagles' junior forward Chris Thompson (Starke, Florida) led the USI attack on the boards as USI outrebounded the Greyhounds, 50-25. Thompson posted his third straight game with double-digit boards, grabbing 15 rebounds.

The Eagles resume GLVC action Sunday when they host Saint Joseph's College at the Physical Activities Center. The tip-off is scheduled for 3:15 p.m.
