EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana men's basketball team made it two in a row to start the 2004-05 GLVC schedule by defeating Saint Joseph's College, 95-87, Sunday afternoon at the Physical Activities Center. USI goes to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in the GLVC, while SJC goes to 2-2 overall, 1-1 GLVC.

Down 10-4 early in the first half, USI senior center Reque Newsome (St. Petersburg, Florida) and sophomore forward Geoff Van Winkle(Ferdinand, Indiana) started the Screaming Eagles on a 22-2 runs to take the lead and never look back. Newsome's first two points of the game started the run and Van Winkle's back-to-back three-point field goals gave USI the lead for good.

The Eagles extended the lead to as many as 18 points in the first half, 32-14, and took a 44-32 lead into the locker room at intermission.

USI continued to build the lead, extending the margin to 20 points on three different occasions. The Pumas, however, made a run at the Eagles to make things interesting. SJC cut the lead to five points, 78-73, with 5:44 to play on the strength of a 25-10 run.

With the lead cut to five, Eagles' senior guard Cris Brunson (Evansville, Indiana) converted an old fashion three-point play and starting an 11-3 run to get the USI lead back to 13 points, 89-76, with 2:08 to play.

The Pumas would cut into the USI lead again, but the closest they would get was the final score of 95-87.

USI had six players score in double-digits, led by junior forward Chris Thompson (Starke, Florida) with 17 points. Junior forward Stacey Pearson (Miami, Florida) and senior center Randy Holbrook (St. Louis, Missouri) followed Thompson with 15 points each, while junior guard David Bryant (Louisville, Kentucky) and Newsome dropped in 12 points apiece. Brunson rounded out the double figure scorers with 10 points.

SJC was led by junior guard/forward Sullivan Sykes with a game-high 41 points.

The Eagles go on the road to continue GLVC action next week, traveling to Lewis University December 2 for a 7:30 p.m. contest and to Southern Illinois University Edwardsville December 4 for a 3 p.m. start.
