USI volleyball drops first conference match

ROMEOVILLE, Ill.—The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team fell for the first time in GLVC play Saturday at the Neil Carey Arena. The Screaming Eagles 22-30, 30-28, 28-30, 20-30 loss to Lewis University puts them into a tie for second in the GLVC with Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.

USI (13-5 overall, 7-1 GLVC) committed eight attacking errors in game one and 11 in game four as it lost for the first time in eight matches. They had 29 attacking errors in the match.

Lewis (11-8 overall, 4-5 GLVC) held the Eagles to a .147 attacking percentage for the match, including a .057 attacking percentage in the final game.

Senior middle blocker Leeanne Gross (Decatur, Indiana) had 14 kills and junior middle blocker Laura Ellerbusch (Newburgh, Indiana) had 11 kills and 13 digs in the losing effort. Senior right-side hitter Natalie Atzinger (Louisville, Kentucky) also had 11 kills and 13 digs.

Freshman setter Stephanie Wilson (Terre Haute, Indiana) had 53 assists and 14 digs, while sophomore outside hitter Amanda Probst (Wheeler, Illinois) chipped in 19 digs.

The Eagles will return home for their final homestand of the 2004 season October 15 when they host Quincy University for a 7 p.m. match at the Physical Activities Center. The homestand includes five matches—one against SIUE and another against the GLVC frontrunner University of Indianapolis—and could play a major factor in the run for GLVC championship.
