USI volleyball sweeps UWP despite traffic

KENOSHA, Wis.—The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team swept the University of Wisconsin-Parkside 30-28, 30-24, 30-23 Friday night at the DeSimone Gymnasium despite arriving to the gym five minutes before the match was scheduled to start.

The Screaming Eagles were late to the match due to traffic congestion in Chicago during their trip to Kenosha. Consequently, USI was granted a 50-minute warm-up period as the match's start time was pushed back from 7 p.m. to 7:45 p.m.

In game one, USI, which improves 13-4 overall, 7-0 in the GLVC, had to overcome a nine-point deficit to win the first set. The Eagles used their momentum from the come-back in the first game to carry them to the sweep and their seventh consecutive victory.

Senior middle blocker Leeanne Gross (Decatur, Indiana) and sophomore outside hitter Emily Ryan (Batesville, Indiana) led the Eagles with 13 and 11 kills, respectively, while freshman setter Stephanie Wilson (Terre Haute, Indiana) recorded a match-high 39 assists. Wilson also had five kills in six attempts for a blistering .833 attacking percentage.

As a team, the Eagles hit .319 for the match, with Gross recording a .522 attacking percentage. She also had 10 digs.

Sophomore outside hitter/libero Amanda Probst (Wheeler, Illinois) recorded a match and career-high 28 digs in the victory.

USI will travel to Romeoville, Illinois, Saturday to take on Lewis University in a 2 p.m. match.
