Final homestand pivotal for championship hopes

The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team's final homestand of the 2004 season begins Friday at 7 p.m. when the Screaming Eagles play host to Quincy University at the Physical Activities Center.

USI (13-5 overall, 7-1 GLVC) is currently tied with Southern Illinois University Edwardsville for second in the GLVC, while the University of Indianapolis is ahead of the pack with an 8-0 record in league play.

The Eagles homestand includes five matches and is headlined with contests against SIUE and Indianapolis. This will be the only time during the regular season that USI and Indianapolis will meet, while the Eagles have already posted a road victory over SIUE.

Senior middle blocker Leeanne Gross (Decatur, Indiana) and junior middle blocker Laura Ellerbusch (Newburgh, Indiana) lead the Eagles with 3.28 and 3.27 kills per game (kpg), respectively, while freshman setter Stephanie Wilson (Terre Haute, Indiana) leads the GLVC with 12.91 assists per game.

Sophomore outside hitter/libero Amanda Probst (Wheeler, Illinois) leads the Eagles with 3.74 digs per game (dpg). She has averaged 5.15 dpg since taking over the libero duties six matches ago.

Quincy (7-15 overall, 3-5 GLVC) poses an intriguing match-up for the Eagles, who lost both contests to the Lady Hawks during the 2003 regular season before sweeping them in the league tournament. The Lady Hawks boast one of the league's most potent outside hitters in senior Amber Heimann, who ranks fourth in the GLVC with 3.94 kpg.

The Eagles will host the University of Missouri-St. Louis Saturday at 2 p.m. UMSL enters this weekend's action with a 7-10 overall record and a 3-5 GLVC record. The Riverwomen are tied with Quincy for seventh in the GLVC.

UMSL is led by freshmen outside hitters Claudia Medina and Heather Nichols. The two are averaging 3.44 and 3.38 kpg, respectively.
