USI gets back on track with 71-63 victory

Evansville, IN—The #1-ranked University of Southern Indiana men's basketball team got back on track with a hard-fought victory, 71-63, over the University of Wisconsin-Parkside Sunday afternoon at the Physical Activities Center. USI raises its record 12-1 overall and 5-1 in the GLVC, while UWP falls to 4-8 overall, 0-5 GLVC.

The Screaming Eagles started the game with a 10-0 run, but the Rangers responded with an 11-0 run of their own to take the lead. The remainder of the half saw five more lead changes and four ties before the Eagles used a 5-0 run to take the lead, 30-25, and went into the locker room with a 32-29 lead at the intermission.

The second half was just like the first half with nine lead changes. USI senior guard Avery Queen (Moreno Valley, California) gave the Eagles for lead for good by hitting a three-point field for a 52-50 USI lead. The field goal sparked an 11-2 run by the Eagles and gave them a 60-52 lead with 6:38 to play.

The Rangers tied to get back into the game and got to within three points at 62-59 with 2:15 to play, but no closer.

In the box score, freshman forward Goeff Van Winkle (Ferdinand, Indiana) led three USI players to score in double figures with 16 points. Senior center John Oden (St. Louis, Missouri) was a point behind Van Winkle with 15 points, while Queen rounded out the double-figure scorers with 10 points.

USI dominated the Rangers on the boards, outrebounding them 44-23. Oden led the Eagles on the boards with nine.

The Eagles return to the road next week when they travel to play the 16th-ranked University of Indianapolis Thursday, January 8, and Northern Kentucky University, Saturday, January 10. Game time Thursday is 6:30 p.m. (CT), while tip next Saturday is 2:15 p.m. (CT). The next home game for the Eagles will be Thursday, January 15, when they host Kentucky Wesleyan College to begin a three game homestand.
