USI's comeback attempt falls short

Indianapolis, IN The #1-ranked University of Southern Indiana men's basketball team attempted to comeback from a 16 points first half deficit, but fell short, 88-87, at 16th-ranked University of Indianapolis Thursday evening. USI falls to 12-2 overall and 5-2 in the GLVC, while Indianapolis goes to 13-1 overall, 6-1 GLVC.

The loss also ends the Screaming Eagles' 11-game road winning streak.

In the first half, the Eagles struggled and were unable to score for the first two-and-a-half minutes of the game. The Greyhounds continued to build leads in the game leading by 16 points, 35-19, with 7:09 remaining in the half and led at the intermission, 57-43.

The first half also was scarred by four technical fouls (three on USI and one on Indianapolis) with USI Head Coach Rick Herdes receiving a pair and was ejected from the game.

The Eagles came out firing in the second and were able to overcome the Indianapolis halftime lead, taking their first lead of the game, 63-62, with 13:41 to play. USI freshman forward Geoff Van Winkle (Ferdinand, Indiana) sparked the comeback with a pair of three-point field goals in the opening minutes of the half.

From the point, the game went back-and-forth until the senior forward Rodney Rollins gave Indianapolis the lead for good, 86-85, with 1:28 to play. Junior guard Cory Bennett sealed the victory for Indianapolis with a pair of free throws to make the score, 88-85 with 15 seconds to play. The second half had 11 lead changes and four times.

USI was led in the game by senior center John Oden (St. Louis, Missouri), who had 22 points. Oden was followed by junior center Randy Holbrook (St. Louis, Missouri), who had 17 points, and senior guard Joe Gordon (Palm Bay, Florida), who added 11 points.

The Eagles conclude their short two-game road trip Saturday, January 10, at Northern Kentucky University in Highland Heights, Kentucky. The GLVC doubleheader begins with the women's game at noon (CT), followed by the men's game at 2:15 p.m.

USI returns to the friendly confines of the Physical Activities Center Thursday, January 15, when it hosts Kentucky Wesleyan College for a GLVC doubleheader. The USI-KWC game begins a three-game homestand for the Eagles.
