Evansville, IN—The #16-ranked University of Southern Indiana men's basketball team swept the season series from Kentucky Wesleyan for the first time since the 1999-2000 with a 72-68 victory Thursday night at the Physical Activities Center. USI breaks a two-game losing streak and raises its record to 12-3 overall and 6-3 in the GLVC, while KWC falls to 7-5 overall, 4-4 GLVC.
It was a typical USI-KWC match-up with six ties and nine lead changes in the game.
After the Panthers started the game with a 5-0 run, the Eagles got fire and raced out to a 22-11 lead with 9:34 to play in the first half. KWC battled back into the game and the teams went into the intermission tied at 36-36.
In the second half, USI increased its lead to eight points, 50-42, with 14:09 to play in the game. The Panthers hung close and took the first of two three point leads, 56-53, with 8:22 to play. After KWC took its second three-point lead, the Eagles made the game deciding 11-2 run to win the game to make the score 71-64 with 40 second to play.
USI had three players score in double figures, led by senior forwardÂ
Billy Harris (Carbondale, Illinois) with 16 points. He was followed by senior guardÂ
Joe Gordon (Palm Bay, Florida) with 12 points and junior guardÂ
Cris Brunson (Evansville, Indiana) with 11 points. Harris also had a game-high nine rebounds.
The Eagles will continue the three-game homestand when they host Quincy University Thursday, January 22, for a 7:30 p.m. contest. USI will conclude the homestand when Southern Illinois University Edwardsville comes to the PAC Saturday, January 24, for a 3:15 p.m. tip-off.
