The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team suffered its first loss of the season Friday evening as it fell to Hillsdale College 17-30, 30-16, 29-31, 29-31, at the Great Lakes Valley Conference/Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Challenge in Findlay, Ohio. The Screaming Eagles had run their record to 5-0 earlier in the day by downing Lake Superior State University 30-24, 30-17, 30-22.
Mistakes hurt USI (5-1) in its loss to Hillsdale. The Eagles had eight service errors and 11 reception errors to go along with five ball handling errors.
Leading the Eagles was sophomore middle hitter
Laura Ellerbusch (Newburgh, Indiana) and junior middle blocker
Leeanne Gross (Decatur, Indiana). Ellerbusch recorded 30 kills in the two matches and rang up a sizzling .441 attacking percentage while Gross recorded 25 kills and finished with 24 digs.
Senior setter
Kim Boehmer (Cincinnati, Ohio) recorded 85 assists during the two matches.
The Eagles will wrap up the GLIAC/GLVC Challenge Saturday as they face Northwood University (9 a.m.) and the University of Findlay (11 a.m.).
