The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team saw its six match winning streak end Saturday as the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Cougars defeated the Screaming Eagles, 3-1, at the Vadalabene Center in Edwardsville, Illinois.
USI (11-3 overall, 1-1 GLVC) won the first game, 30-25, but fell in the next three 30-21, 30-27, and 30-19. The Eagles entered the match with a 76-4 record since 2000 when winning the first game of a match. However, SIUE was responsible for two of those four losses.
Sophomore middle hitter
Laura Ellerbusch (Newburgh, Indiana) led the Eagles with 13 kills and a match-high .565 attacking percentage. She also recorded a team-leading five blocks.
Junior middle blocker
Leeanne Gross (Decatur, Indiana) chipped in 13 kills and nine digs while senior outside hitter
Ashley Riordan (Mt. Vernon, Indiana) tapped in with 10 kills and a team-high 16 digs.
The Eagles will finally have the opportunity to play in front of their home crowd when they host Saint Joseph's College Friday, September 26, at the Physical Activities Center. It will be the first of seven home matches for the Eagles in 2003.
