The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team tallied four victories in four tries at the Radisson/UAH Vollebyall Classic in Huntsville, Alabama, on Friday and Saturday. The Screaming Eagles reached 4-0 by winning nine of 10 games over the four matches.
The Eagles were the only institution in the nine-team classic to go 4-0.
USI started regular season play by defeating Newberry College 3-0 (30-13, 30-15, 30-11) Friday afternoon. The match was highlighted by senior setter
Kim Boehmer (Cincinnati, Ohio) picking up her 4,000th career assists. After this weekend's action, Boehmer has USI career-best 4,168 assists.
The Eagles finished Friday's action by defeating Presbyterian College, 3-0 (30-28, 30-22, 30-26). USI continued its winning ways on Saturday, defeating Tusculum College, 3-1 (30-20, 30-12, 18-30, 30-20), and Edinboro University, 3-0 (32-30, 20-28, 30-22). Edinboro was an NCAA Division II Elite Eight team a year ago.
For the weekend, USI was led offensively by junior middleblocker
Leeanne Gross (Decatur, Indiana). Gross posted a team-best 60 kills in the tournament, averaging 4.6 per game, and recorded a squad-high eight aces in four matches.
Sophomore middle hitter
Laura Ellerbusch (Newburgh, Indiana) followed Gross with 48 kills, averaging 3.7 per game. Ellerbusch also shined defensively, recording12 solo blocks.
The Eagles will resume action next weekend at the GLIAC/GLVC Challenge in Findlay, Ohio, Friday and Saturday, September 5-6. USI will not play at home match until Friday, September 26, when it opens GLVC action at the Physical Activities Center by hosting the University of Indianapolis.
