USI volleyball wins first two

HUNSTVILLE, Ala.—The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team started the 2003 campaign off on the right foot, winning its first two matches of the season Friday at the Radisson Inn/UAH Volleyball Classic. The Screaming Eagles swept both Newberry College and Presbyterian College in three games to open the season 2-0 for the first time since 2000.

USI dominated the first match of the day, using a .361 attacking percentage to blast by Newberry 30-13, 30-15, and 30-11. Senior setter Kim Boehmer (Cincinnati, Ohio) recorded her 4,000th career assist in the match as she finished with 34.

Junior middle blocker Leeanne Gross (Decatur, Indiana) and freshman outside hitter Emily Ryan (Batesville, Indiana) recorded 11 and 10 kills each to lead USI to its season-opening victory.

Gross recorded 15 kills to help the Eagles skip past Presbyterian in the nightcap. USI erased an eight-point deficit in game one to win the match 30-28, 30-22, and 30-26.

Boehmer set the table for USI's attack, recording a match-high 41 assists to go along with 10 digs.

The Eagles will take on Tusculum College and Edinboro University to wrap up the Radisson Inn/UAH Volleyball Classic tomorrow. Match times are 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., respectively.
