Game 1:
Northern Kentucky 3 Southern Indiana 1
Game 2 :
Southern Indiana (23-27, 12-17 GLVC): 2 Northern Kentucky (28-23, 15-14 GLVC): 0
The University of Southern Indiana baseball team earned a split in a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader with Northern Kentucky University, but the game one loss ended all hopes of a berth in the conference tournament. USI lost the opener 3-1, but won the nightcap 2-0.
Senior left-handerÂ
Joe Stanisz's 0(Highland, Indiana) gave USI his best game as an Eagle in the 2-0 win. Stanisz, 4-2 this spring, made the slim lead stand up by going eight-plus innings and allowing only two hits. He also struck out six Norse's hitters. Freshman right-handerÂ
Matt Goans (Evansville, Indiana) picked up his second save of the year by getting the Eagles and Stanisz out of a bases-loaded jam in the ninth inning.
The only run the Eagles would need came in the first inning when senior rightfielderÂ
Steve Owen (Wauwatosa, Indiana) singled in sophomore centerfielderÂ
Noah Wetzel (New Salisbury, Indiana). Wetzel had reached on a walk, stole second base, and advanced to third on a wild pitch.
USI's insurance tally came in the fifth when senior leftfielderÂ
Andy Nucci (Ft. Wayne, Indiana) scored on a two-out triple by Wetzel.
The first game saw senior left-handerÂ
Brian Anderson (Brazil, Indiana) remain one win short of the USI single season record. Anderson took the complete-game loss after allowing two runs in the second and an unearned run in the third to fall to 7-5 in 2003.
Offensively, the Eagles were no-hit through the first five innings in the opener. USI connected on five hits, two coming in the sixth inning when the Eagles would score their only run of the contest on a RBI double by sophomore first baseman
 Matt Keener (Newburgh, Indiana).
USI, 23-27 overall and 12-17 in the GLVC, will finish the 2003 season with Senior Day Sunday, May 4, when it hosts NKU for a single game. Pre-game ceremonies will be at 11:45 a.m. with the first pitch at noon.
