Cold weather, Bellarmine chill Eagle batters

Call it cold weather or call it Bellarmine University pitching, but either way, the University of Southern Indiana softball team struggled to get hits for a second straight day. The Screaming Eagles mustered up just seven hits in two games as they dropped both games of a twinbill to the Lady Knights, 3-1 in game one and 1-0 in game two, Sunday afternoon in Louisville, Kentucky.

USI (11-14 overall, 5-7 GLVC) jumped out to a one-run lead after junior catcher Kristen Houseworth (Martinsville, Indiana) singled in sophomore outfielder Sunny Oelling (Valparaiso, Indiana) in the top of the first inning of game one.

Bellarmine (20-12 overall, 9-5 GLVC) answered USI with a run in the bottom half of the first inning and tacked on the winning runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to pick up the 3-1 victory in the first game.

In the second game, Bellarmine racked up four hits in the bottom of the first inning to produce the game's only run. USI recorded just two hits in the contest as it lost for the fourth straight game.

Junior pitcher Shannon Emmons (Boonville, Indiana) was pinned with the loss in both games. Emmons (6-10) started and finished both games, giving up a combined four runs off 11 hits in 12 innings of work. She recorded six strikeouts and walked just two batters.

USI will travel to Battle Creek, Michigan, to partake in the GLIAC/GLVC Challenge next Saturday and Sunday, April 12-13. Pairings are expected to be announced sometime on Monday.
