The University of Southern Indiana softball team swept a doubleheader from Quincy University Sunday afternoon at Harry Phillips Field in Quincy, Illinois. The Screaming Eagles, winners of 12 straight games, won the first game, 9-0 in six innings, and the second, 6-3, to improve to 24-16 overall and 13-7 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

More importantly, USI's sweep of Quincy in its GLVC regular season finale, combined with Bellarmine University's loss to Wisconsin-Parkside, means the Eagles will enter the GLVC Tournament as the fourth seed and be the home team in the opening round of the tournament.

In game one, USI jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning when junior first baseman Monica Tepe (Granger, Indiana) doubled to left-centerfield, driving in junior pitcher Shannon Emmons (Boonville, Indiana). The Eagles exploded for five runs, two of which were provided by junior catcher Kristen Houseworth's (Middletown, Indiana) sixth home run of the season, in the top of the third inning.

USI added three more runs in the top of the sixth inning to get the 9-0 win in six innings. Emmons (13-12) went the distance, giving up five hits and striking out four batters, to pick up her sixth straight win.

Emmons helped herself from the plate by going 2-of-4 with a triple and a pair of RBIs.

In game two, the Eagles trailed 2-1 going into the seventh inning before junior third baseman Nichole Pike (Fairfield, Illinois) hit a three-run shot with one out to give the Eagles a 4-2 lead. USI tacked on two more runs to take a 6-2 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh.

For the day, Pike was 4-of-8 with the home run, three runs scored, and three RBIs.

Quincy (10-29, 4-14 GLVC) scored a run in the bottom of the seventh inning, but Emmons came on to get the final two outs and secure the victory for the Eagles. Emmons was credited wither her second save of the season.

Freshman pitcher Missy Grover (Mishawaka, Indiana) picked up the victory after giving up three runs. Grover (10-4) spread nine hits and a walk throughout 6 1/3 innings of work as she won her sixth straight decision.

USI will close out its regular season schedule Monday afternoon when it plays host to Brescia University. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m. at the USI Softball Field. The Eagles will play Bellarmine in the first round of the GLVC Tournament this Friday, May 2, in Edwardsville, Illinois. Game times for the tournament are to be announced.
