The University of Southern Indiana baseball team split a doubleheader with Quincy University, losing game one 2-1 in extra innings and winning game two 8-1, Saturday afternoon at Quincy Stadium in Quincy, Illinois.

USI (15-22 overall, 7-11 GLVC) struck first in game one, notching its only run in the top of the sixth inning. However, the Hawks answered with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning to eventually send the game in to extra frames.

Senior left-hander Brian Anderson (Brazil, Indiana) pitched seven strong innings for the Screaming Eagles but got into a bases-loaded jam with no outs in the bottom of the eighth inning. After replacing Anderson, junior pitcher Drew Neel (Newburgh, Indiana) gave up the game-ending single to Quincy centerfielder Ricky Harbour.

Anderson (5-4) was charged with the loss after giving up two runs off seven hits in seven-plus innings of work.

USI's offense exploded in the top of the fourth inning of the second game. The Eagles took advantage of one of Quincy's two errors and sent eight batters to the plate as they reeled off five runs. Sophomore shortstop Corey Goers (LaPorte, Indiana) capped the inning off with his third homerun of the season, a two-run blast over the leftfield fence.

The Eagles tacked on three more runs later in the contest and senior right-hander Dan Tomashek (Ft. Wayne, Indiana) spread seven hits throughout the seven-inning affair to pick up the complete-game win. Tomashek (2-2) gave up just one run and struck out five batters.

USI and Quincy will square off in the rubber-match of the three-game series tomorrow at Quincy Stadium. First pitch is slated for noon. With the split, Quincy moves to 19-17 overall and 10-10 in the GLVC.
