The University of Southern Indiana baseball team split a doubleheader with the Lewis University Saturday afternoon at the USI Baseball. The Screaming Eagles, who are 15-17 overall and 6-9 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, won the first game, 12-8, but lost the nightcap 8-3.

The Flyers go to 9-29 overall and 5-15 in the GLVC.

USI had to overcome a five-run first inning rally by the Flyer to the win the opener. The Eagles rebounded to score three in the second inning, one in the fourth, and took the lead with two in the bottom of the fifth. The game was put out of reach by a six-run sixth by the Eagles.

For the second game in a row, sophomore designated hitter Toby Pritchard (Ft. Wayne, Indiana) led the Eagles at the plate. Pritchard went two-for-three with two runs scored, a double, and four RBIs. He is hitting .600 (6-10) in his last three games with six runs scored, four doubles, and six RBIs.

Sophomore first baseman Matt Keener (Evansville, Indiana) and sophomore centerfielder Noah Wetzel (New Salisbury, Indiana) followed Pritchard with multiple hits. Keener was two-for-three with three runs scored and an RBI. Wetzel was a perfect two-for-two with a pair of runs scored and an RBI.

On the mound, senior right-hander Bowie Johnson (Brazil, Indiana) pitched brilliantly in relief, retiring 13 of 18 batters after entering the game. He allowed three runs in the top of the seventh, but was able to hold on for his first victory of the year. Johnson, 1-5 this spring, went 5 1/3 innings, allowed five hits and three runs, while striking out five.

To start the game, the Flyers roughed up senior left-handed starter Brian Anderson (Brazil, Indiana) for five runs, three earned, in 1 2/3 innings of work.

A four-run third spelled doom for the Eagles in the 8-3 nightcap loss. Each team scored a pair of tallies in the second inning before the Flyers touch USI sophomore right-handed starter Drew Neel (Newburgh, Indiana) for four runs in the third. Neel, who dropped to 2-3 this spring, went 7 1/3 innings and allowed 14 hits and eight runs (six earned). The sophomore also recorded six strike outs.

At the plate, Wetzel led the Eagles with a pair of hits.

The Eagles will resume the three-game series with Lewis Sunday, April 13, at the USI Baseball Field. The first pitch for Sunday's single game is scheduled for noon.
