The University of Southern Indiana baseball team opened its spring trip Saturday afternoon in Carrollton, Georgia, by splitting a doubleheader with the State University of West Georgia. The Screaming Eagles took the first game, 8-4, but dropped the second contest, 4-1.

In game one, USI senior infielder Justin Konopacki (Ft. Wayne, Indiana) went 4-for-4 from the plate with a home run, three runs scored, three stolen bases, and a pair of RBIs. Junior left-hander Adam Anderson (Raleigh, Illinois) pitched all seven innings to pick up the victory. Anderson gave up four runs off eight hits as he improved to 2-1 on the season.

After giving up a run in the second inning and two more in the third inning, Anderson settled down to retire 11-of-12 batters before giving up a one-out double in the bottom of the seventh inning.

For the game, the Eagles rang up 11 hits and had six players record an RBI. USI held the Braves to eight hits.

USI (5-3) struck first in the second inning of the second game when sophomore utility player Matt Keener (Newburgh, IN) singled in junior catcher Mike Kottmeyer (Boulder, Illinois).

West Georgia (13-5) answered in the bottom of the fourth inning when second baseman Jason Burgess crossed the plate.

USI sophomore reliever Nathan Esche (Mt. Vernon, Indiana) gave up a three-run blast to the first batter he faced, West Georgia shortstop Harris Lee, in the bottom of the sixth inning. Esche came on for senior hurler Joe Stanisz (Highland, Indiana) with one out and two on in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Stanisz (0-1) was charged with the loss after giving up three runs, two earned, and four hits through five-and-one-third innings pitched.

The Eagles will finish the three-game series with West Georgia on Sunday with a single nine-inning game. First pitch is slated for noon.
