The University of Southern Indiana softball team split a conference doubleheader with Lewis University, losing the first game 2-1 in 11 innings and winning the second game 7-2, Saturday afternoon at the USI Softball Field in Evansville, Indiana. The Screaming Eagles (7-10 overall, 3-3 GLVC) had their 16-game home winning streak end with the loss in the first game.
In game one, the Eagles struck first when senior outfielder
Rachel Bowling (Middletown, Indiana) led the bottom of the fourth inning off with a blast past the right-centerfield wall.
Junior hurler
Shannon Emmons (Boonville, Indiana) pitched 6 2/3 scoreless innings before Lewis' shortstop Amy Yusko singled to centerfield to drive in fellow teammate Amy Roberts. Roberts reached on a throwing error by USI shortstop
Jenny Duell (Lafayette, Indiana).
The Eagles had a chance to win the game in the bottom of the seventh and eighth innings, but they got a little too aggressive on the base paths as each of the innings were ended with a throw from the outfield to gun down runners trying to score from second base.
In the seventh inning, senior leftfielder
Ginnie Roberts (Lafayette, Indiana) rounded third on a single by sophomore rightfielder
Sunny Oelling (Valparaiso, Indiana) only to be thrown out at home by Lewis leftfielder Robin Martz.
In the eighth inning, Bowling came around third on a single by third baseman
Monica Tepe (Granger, Indiana) only to be thrown out at home by Lewis rightfielder Crystal Bowen.
After giving up just one unearned run in through 10 innings of work, Emmons was touched up on a double to right-centerfield by Lewis's Bowen. Bowen advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and later scored the go-ahead and winning run when Lewis third baseman Danielle Schaub singled to centerfield with two outs.
USI went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 11th inning as it dropped game one, 2-1. Emmons picked up the loss after giving up the two runs, off seven hits. She walked just one batter as she fell to 4-7 on the season.
In game two, the Eagles wasted little time in mounting offense. USI scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning and five more in the bottom of the second inning to jump out to a 7-0 lead.
Oelling, who went 4-of-6 from the plate in the first game, went 3-of-4 in the second game with a double and a pair of runs scored. Roberts and junior catcher
Kristen Houseworth (Martinsville, Indiana) each had a pair of RBIs while Emmons also picked up an RBI with her double in the second inning.
Freshman
Missy Grover (Mishawaka, Indiana) improved to 3-3 on the season after giving up two runs, one earned, in six-plus innings of work.
The Eagles will take on the University of Wisconsin-Parkside Sunday afternoon. First pitch is slated for noon at the USI Softball Field. The doubleheader is Varsity Club Day as well as "USI Family Day with the Eagles."
