EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- The University of Southern Indiana baseball team split a doubleheader with the University of Indianapolis Sunday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field. The Screaming Eagles won game one, a scheduled Great Lakes Valley Conference game, 2-1, but fell in the non-conference game two, 6-1.

The split took USI's record to 10-10 overall and 2-2 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, while Indianapolis goes to 14-5 overall, 4-2 GLVC.

USI scored all of the runs sophomore right-hander Matt Keener (Newburgh, Indiana) would need in the first inning of the Eagles' game one victory. Sophomore centerfielder Noah Wetzel (New Salisbury, Indiana) singled with one out and advanced to third on a single by senior second baseman Adam Schiff (Evansville, Indiana).

Wetzel scored the first run of the game on a ground out by senior third baseman Justin Konopacki (Ft. Wayne, Indiana) with Schiff advancing to second on the play. Keener helped himself with two-outs, singling in Schiff with a drive to left field for the 2-0 lead. Indianapolis would get its only tally in the fifth.

Keener picked up his second victory of the year, going 7 1/3 innings, allowing seven hits, one run and struck out three. Senior right-hander Daniel Tomashek (Ft. Wayne, Indiana) earned his first save of the year, going 1 2/3 innings and striking out two.

In the nightcap, Indianapolis scored three in the fourth and three in the fifth and cruised to a 6-1 victory. Greyhound junior right-hander Nolan Bastien blanked the Eagles for six innings, allowing just one hit, as he raised his record to 2-1.

The Eagles resume GLVC action Wednesday, March 26, in Owensboro, Kentucky, with a 1 p.m. doubleheader against Kentucky Wesleyan College. The next home game for USI won't be until Wednesday, April 2, when the University of Missouri-St. Louis comes to Evansville for a 2 p.m. contest.
