Game Recap: Softball | | Dan McDonnell, USI Athletic Communications

Eagles swept by #16 Cougars

The University of Southern Indiana softball team fell in consecutive games to 16th-ranked SIU Edwardsville Saturday afternoon at Cougar Field in Edwardsville, Illinois. The Screaming Eagles lost the first game, 6-1, and the second game, 3-2, as they fell to 4-9 overall and 0-2 in the GLVC. SIUE improves to 13-5 overall and 2-0 in the GLVC.

In game one, the Eagles gave up three runs in the bottom of the first inning, a run in the bottom of the fourth inning, and two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Senior utility player Rachel Bowling (Middletown, Indiana) hit her first home run of the season in the top of the seventh to provide USI's offense.

Junior pitcher Shanon Emmons (Boonville, Indiana) was charged with the loss in the first game after giving up four runs. Emmons (2-6) was pulled in the top of the fourth inning after giving up a solo home run that gave the Cougars a 4-0 lead.

After surrendering three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning of the second game, the Eagles fought back to score a run in the top of the sixth inning and another in the top of the seventh inning to get back into the contest.

In the sixth inning, junior catcher Kristen Houseworth (Martinsville, Indiana) hit her team-leading third home run of the season to draw the Eagles to within two runs. USI had the bases loaded later in the inning but could not get anything else across as it went into the seventh inning trailing by a pair of runs.

Sophomore outfielder Sunny Oelling (Valparaiso, Indiana) led the top half of the seventh inning off with a single up the middle. Oelling eventually scored on an infield single by junior first baseman Monica Tepe (Granger, Indiana).

Once again, the Eagles had the bases loaded and had a chance to tie or take the lead with a base hit. However, SIUE's RyAnn Spann closed out USI's chances as she got junior outfielder Jessica Brown (Evansville, Indiana) to line out to SIUE shortstop V.J. Schmidt for the final out.

For the game, the Eagles stranded 11 runners, including six in the final two innings.

Freshman pitcher Missy Grover (Mishawaka, Indiana) was charged with the loss after giving up all three runs. Grover (2-3) left after five innings after being hit in the knee by SIUE's starting pitcher Missy Koenig.

USI will open its 2003 home schedule Sunday afternoon with a GLVC doubleheader against the University of Missouri-St. Louis. First pitch is slated for noon at the USI Softball Field.
