Eagles start conference action with a win

The University of Southern Indiana baseball team started Great Lakes Valley Conference action off on the right foot with a 7-0 road victory over Bellarmine University in Louisville, Kentucky, Thursday afternoon. USI raises its record to 9-7 overall and 1-0 in the GLVC, while Bellarmine falls to 5-15 overall, 2-2 GLVC.

Up 1-0 in the seventh inning, the Screaming Eagles scored five times to put the game out of reach. Senior leftfielder Andy Nucci (Ft. Wayne, Indiana) and senior second baseman Adam Schiff (Evansville, Indiana) capped off the USI seventh by knocking a pair of runs each. Nucci finished the game by going two-for-five with two RBIs and a run scored, while Schiff was one-for-four with the two RBIs.

USI sophomore designated hitter Toby Pritchard (Ft. Wayne, Indiana) also collected a pair of hits for the Eagles, going two-for-four with a run scored and two RBIs. Pritchard's first RBI came in the five-run seventh, while his second was USI's seventh and final run of the game in the eighth inning.

USI senior left-hander Brian Anderson (Brazil, Indiana) led the way on the mound for the Eagles. Anderson raised his record to a team-high 4-1, allowing just six hits and striking out two. The win also marked Anderson's third complete game and second shutout of the young season.

The Eagles open the GLVC home schedule Saturday and Sunday, March 22-23, when they host the University of Indianapolis. Saturday's doubleheader and Sunday's single game begin at noon. The Greyhounds come to Evansville with a 11-4 overall record, 2-1 GLVC.
